Two tools you can use today
The first shows you which channels your distance runs on. The second walks you through one small, logged gesture of closeness you can practise this week. Neither replaces a professional. Both are free and used right here.
Distance map across four channels
Eight short observations about how close you let people get — and when you step back. Used in attachment and relational therapy. Not a diagnosis — a mirror.
This is NOT a diagnosis. It is a self-check. Each item describes a channel where distance lives. The pattern across items matters more than any single one. If several items describe your everyday way of relating, talking to a professional trained in attachment or relational dynamics matters.
Your first closeness today — 5 minutes
A small logged gesture of closeness you can practise this week. The point is not to change the relationship overnight — it is to show yourself that the pattern is changeable.
- 1
Name one moment in the last week when your body started to leave before anyone asked you to.
A cancelled plan. An edited sentence. A hug cut short. One. The smaller the moment, the better for a first move.
- 2
Pick one concrete gesture you could have done instead, and write it in your own words.
Three short lines. Specific. Not "I could have stayed" but "I could have asked one more question before saying goodnight."
- 3
Decide when you will do it this week. A date and a time, not "soon."
A specific time tells your body it is real. Vague timing gets retracted under pressure.
- 4
Do it. Stay for the wobble. Do not retract in the next 24 hours.
The wobble is the pattern breaking. You can write the follow-up, just do not send it.
If you feel this is not enough, talking to a professional trained in attachment or relational dynamics can be the next step.
