8 signs you treat yourself worse than anyone else
Eight signs of how you treat yourself after you fail: the replay, the isolation, the denied rest. Not shyness. Not grit. A measurable inner habit.
“I would never speak to a friend the way I speak to myself after I mess up.” If that sentence has been true this week, this piece is about that voice — not about saying what you think in a meeting.
Neff (2003) built and validated the Self-Compassion Scale: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. Three ways of treating yourself after you fail, scored, not guessed. DOI: 10.1080/15298860309027
MacBeth and Gumley (2012) meta-analysed that scale against psychopathology: more self-compassion, less clinical distress. Not a slogan. An accumulated finding. DOI: 10.1016/j.cpr.2012.06.003
1. The distinction that matters before the eight signs
Self-compassion is not grit with better lighting. It is not dropping the bar. It is the sentence you use when the bar is missed.
| After a fail | Self-compassion | The whip |
|---|---|---|
| Kindness | ”You missed a number. It can be corrected." | "You are a disaster.” |
| Common humanity | ”People miss numbers." | "Only I do this.” |
| Mindfulness | You look at the sting without drowning in it | You replay it for three hours or pretend it did not happen |
If you change the title of this table to “how to speak up at work”, it stops making sense. That is the test Wayne asked for.
2. Sign 1 — you talk to yourself worse than to anyone you love
You have a kind sentence for a colleague who missed a deadline. You do not have one for yourself. The gap is the sign. Neff called the kind side self-kindness and the other side self-judgment. You do not need a questionnaire to hear which one arrived first today.
3. Sign 2 — the error still finds you three hours later
The meeting ended. The email was sent. Your body is at dinner and your mind is still in the mistake. That is not “being thorough”. That is rumination wearing the costume of standards. Mindfulness, in Neff’s scale, is looking at the pain without living inside the replay.
4. Sign 3 — the fail leaves you uniquely broken
“This would not happen to a competent person.” Common humanity is the opposite sentence: people fail. Isolation is the feeling that the fail is a private disease. MacBeth and Gumley found that isolation tracks with more distress, not with more excellence.
5. Sign 4 — rest has to be earned, and you have not earned it
You cancel the walk because the draft was imperfect. You sleep less because the list is unfinished. Denying rest is not discipline when the inner logic is punishment. Self-kindness includes letting a body recover without a court hearing.
6. Sign 5 — the day is remembered only as what went wrong
Ask yourself tonight what went well. If the mind returns a blank and then a catalogue of misses, the filter is the sign. The Self-Compassion Scale does not ask you to invent praise. It asks whether the whole day can be seen, not only the stain.
| Filter | What you keep | What you drop |
|---|---|---|
| Whip | The typo, the pause, the look | The three things that worked |
| Self-compassion | The typo and the three things | Nothing required — you can see both |
7. Sign 6 — you can comfort everyone and have no sentence for you
Friends get warmth. You get the transcript of the fail. If the kind voice only works when the person is not you, it is not a trait you lack. It is a permission you have not given yourself. Neff measured that permission as self-kindness.
8. Sign 7 — gentleness feels like laziness winning
“If I am kind to myself I will stop trying.” That belief keeps the whip in the job description. MacBeth and Gumley did not find that self-compassion predicted less effort. They found less psychopathology. The bar can stay. The whip can go.
9. Sign 8 — you drown in the pain or you pretend it did not happen
Mindfulness, in this scale, is the middle: you look. Over-identification is drowning. Avoidance is pretending. Both leave you without a usable next sentence. The usable sentence is short, factual, and not a verdict on your character.
10. Table of the eight — what each one is asking
| # | Sign | What it is asking |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Worse than anyone you love | Write the sentence you would say to them |
| 2 | Three-hour replay | Name the fail once, then stop the loop on purpose |
| 3 | Uniquely broken | Name one person who has failed like this |
| 4 | Rest unearned | Take twenty minutes without a trial |
| 5 | Only the stain | Write three things that also happened |
| 6 | Kindness only outbound | Use one inbound sentence today |
| 7 | Kindness = laziness | Keep the standard; drop the insult |
| 8 | Drown or pretend | Look for sixty seconds, then choose a next act |
A kitchen case. You burned the rice. The friend version is “the rice burned, we order something, nobody died.” The self version is “you cannot even cook, of course you cannot keep a life together.” Same stove. Two moral universes. Self-compassion is not pretending the rice is fine. It is refusing to turn rice into a character trial.
A work case. You sent a slide with the wrong year. The colleague who did it last month got “easy fix.” You got a three-hour inner hearing. Neff’s self-kindness is the colleague sentence, used inbound. Common humanity is remembering last month’s colleague. Mindfulness is correcting the year without a novel about your competence.
A body case. You skipped a workout. The whip says you are lazy and the rest of the week is already lost. The kind sentence says you skipped one session and tomorrow still exists. MacBeth and Gumley did not measure workouts. They measured distress. The whip does not make you train more when it also makes you hate the body that has to train.
A relationship case. You snapped at someone you love. Shame arrives as “you are the kind of person who ruins rooms.” A usable sentence is “you snapped, you can repair, snapping is human.” Repair is an action. Character assassination is not repair.
If you still think this is about speaking up in meetings, notice that none of these cases require another person in the room except the last one, and even then the work is the sentence you use on yourself after, not the sentence you failed to say in the meeting.
People who live with a loud inner court often have a second skill that looks like high function: they deliver, they anticipate, they do not drop balls. The cost is paid at night. Self-compassion does not ask them to drop the balls. It asks them to stop using delivery as proof they are allowed to exist.
Neff’s 2003 paper is a scale paper. That matters. A scale means the pattern can be more or less, not on or off. You can score kinder on a Tuesday and cruel on a Thursday. The eight signs are not a diagnosis. They are a map of Thursdays.
MacBeth and Gumley (2012) put many studies in one picture. The picture is not “be nicer and depression vanishes.” The picture is: people who treat themselves with less contempt tend to show less psychopathology across samples. If your inner climate is contempt, taking that seriously is not self-help fluff. It is reading a meta-analysis without turning it into a personality insult.
How the three components fail in a single afternoon:
| Hour | Event | Kindness fails as | Humanity fails as | Mindfulness fails as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10:00 | Typo in a mail | ”Idiot" | "Only I” | Replay until noon |
| 14:00 | Short with a child | ”Monster parent" | "Good parents never” | Either freeze or joke it away |
| 22:00 | Unfinished list | Rest denied | ”Real adults finish” | The list becomes the whole self |
You do not need all eight signs every day. Two signs, loud, for months, already describe a climate. The tools on this hub ask six questions about the last two weeks for that reason: climate, not a single weather report.
What people mix up, and why the mix-up costs years:
- High standards versus the whip. Standards say what good work looks like. The whip says what you are if you miss. You can keep 1 and fire 2.
- Honesty versus contempt. Honesty names the miss. Contempt names a defective person. The first is usable. The second is a closed door.
- Motivation versus fear. Fear can produce a burst. It also produces freeze, delay, and nights that do not restore. Self-compassion is not the opposite of motivation. It is the opposite of treating fear as the only fuel.
- Isolation versus responsibility. Responsibility says “I did this.” Isolation says “I am the only one who does this, therefore I am other.” Responsibility can repair. Isolation usually hides.
A second week if the first week felt theatrical. Use the same seven days, but pick one domain only: work, or body, or home. The whip often has a favorite room. Training in the favorite room is slower and more honest than training in a room where you are already kind.
If you write the friend-sentence and it still sounds like a greeting card, make it smaller. “You missed a number” is enough. “You are worthy of love” is often too big for a nervous system trained on contempt. Small and true beats large and fake. Neff’s items are closer to small and true.
Screen-reader note on the bars above: they are illustrations of how common a pattern can feel, not your score. Your score is the map in the tools, which you fill yourself.
When the eight signs show up together, people sometimes look for a villain in childhood. Sometimes there is one. Sometimes the climate was simply a house where love was quiet and mistakes were loud. This article will not reconstruct your house. It will ask you to change today’s sentence. History can wait for a therapist. Today’s sentence cannot wait for a complete history.
If you are reading this at 1 a.m. because the replay will not stop, the move is not another article. The move is: write the fail in one factual line, write the friend line, put the phone down, and if sleep is already gone and despair is in the room, use the crisis numbers. Self-compassion includes not doing inner court at 1 a.m. without a judge who is kind.
Another walk, slower. Monday you miss a call. Tuesday you forget a name. Wednesday you send a short reply that sounds colder than you meant. None of these events is a tragedy. The whip can still turn each one into a trial that lasts until sleep. Self compassion names the miss, repairs what can be repaired, and refuses the trial. That refusal is not denial. Denial would skip the repair. The whip skips the repair too, because a trial does not send the right file, does not call back, does not write the warmer second message. Action lives next to kindness more often than it lives next to contempt. That is the practical argument, even before the scale and the meta analysis.
The practical argument is enough to start tonight without waiting.
11. A week of practice, not a personality transplant
Day 1: catch the first sentence after a small fail. Write it. Day 2: write the sentence you would use on a friend. Day 3: say the second sentence once, quietly. Day 4: notice whether rest was treated as a crime. Day 5: notice isolation (“only me”). Day 6: look at the sting for one minute without a story. Day 7: pick one sign that moved and one that did not.
This is not “love yourself”. It is Neff’s three components in a week you can actually live.
Here is a longer walk through one ordinary fail, so the eight signs are not abstract.
You send a message with the wrong attachment. Nobody dies. Ten minutes later the correct file is there. In those ten minutes the whip can run all eight signs: contempt (“how can you be this sloppy”), replay (the send button in a loop), isolation (“a serious person would never”), rest later denied because you “wasted” the day, the evening remembered only as the miss, no kind inbound sentence, gentleness treated as an excuse, and either a spiral or a joke that pretends you do not care.
Self-compassion in the same ten minutes looks boring. You name the miss. You send the right file. You tell yourself the sentence you would tell a colleague. You do not make a documentary. You drink water. You go back to the next task. That boredom is the point. Drama is the whip’s favorite fuel.
If you need a script because your mind goes blank, use this and then throw it away when you have your own words: “I sent the wrong file. I sent the right one. People do this. I can feel annoyed without putting myself on trial.” Four short lines. Kindness, fact, humanity, mindfulness. No poster.
Repeat that script on the next three small fails this week. Do not wait for a career-ending fail to practice. Career-ending fails are the worst classroom. Small fails are the gym.
If someone in your life mocks this work (“so now you congratulate yourself for basic competence”), that mockery is data about their climate, not a verdict on the method. You can keep the method private. Self-compassion does not require an audience. That is another way it is not assertiveness.
12. Details people ask when the signs feel too accurate
Is this depression?
This page does not diagnose. Self-criticism and low self-compassion can sit next to depression and they can sit without it. If sleep, appetite, or hope have collapsed, that is a different door — and it is a door worth opening with someone trained. The Crisis box below is for danger, not for labels.
I am high-performing. Does this still apply?
Yes. High standards and a whip often travel together. Dunkley's work on self-criticism (a sibling construct) showed harsh inner evaluation predicting distress above personal standards. Self-compassion is how you treat the miss, not whether you have a bar.
What if the kind sentence feels fake?
It will, if the whip has been the native language. Fake is information: you are speaking a second language. Repeat the friend's sentence, not a poster slogan. Specific beats generic.
Do I need a course?
Some people move with the week above. Some need a person in the room because the voice is old and loud. MacBeth and Gumley are a reason to take the pattern seriously, not a reason to wait for a perfect protocol.
A last distinction that saves people years: self-compassion is not a mood. Moods pass. The sentence you use after a fail is a habit. Habits can be counted. That is why a scale exists. If you wait to “feel” kind, you will wait for a mood. If you change the sentence, the mood sometimes follows, and sometimes it does not — and the work still happened.
People also wait to start until they “deserve” kindness. That wait is the whip writing the rules of the game. The rule of this page is the opposite: the miss is the moment the kind sentence is for. Using it only after a good day is using it when you least need it.
If you live with someone who also uses a whip on themselves, you may have a silent pact: neither of you is allowed to be human. Breaking the pact in your own mouth first is not betrayal. It is how the room learns a second language.
The eight signs are a climate report. Climate changes slowly, then all at once, when the sentence changes and stays changed for weeks. That is enough reason to start tonight on a small fail, not on your biography.
13. Caja de crisis
If you are not safe right now, this article is not the tool. Call or write. In Colombia, Línea 123 and Línea 106. In the United States, 988. In the UK, Samaritans 116 123. Local emergency numbers if you are in immediate danger.
One more ordinary picture, because the work dies in abstraction. You wake up late. The whip writes a morning essay about your character. Self-compassion writes: you woke late; the first hour can still be used; lateness is human; you can feel the rush without calling yourself a failure for the next twelve hours. Then you make coffee. The essay is optional. The coffee is not.
If you have children, they will learn the climate of your inner court even if you never describe it. A kind inbound sentence is not only for you. It is the weather in the house. That is not a guilt trip. It is a reason the habit matters on days when you do not “feel worth it.”
14. What to do after you close the tab
If you want a person, not only a page: rdkterapia.
Open the tools on this hub. The map is scorn / isolation / holding — not a social-skills quiz. The second tool is one kind sentence toward yourself after a real stumble this week. Then the test on Psique if you want a number. Professional help if the voice is costing sleep.
The pain of this page is the way you treat yourself after you fail. If you swapped the title for assertiveness, the eight signs would be the wrong eight. That is how you know the article is finally about this pain.
